Seasons change and so does your skin
I love autumn with the beautiful, crisp air and glorious colors starting to emerge.
I heard the weatherman say recently that there is 50% less moisture in the air, and my skin can really tell. Has your skin become dry over the last few weeks? Often with the change of season, we notice changes in our skin. Temperature fluctuations, once we start using the heater at home or in the car and hot showers, it can start to compromise our skin barrier.
A compromised skin barrier is when the very top layer of the epidermis — the stratum corneum — gets weak and develops areas where water can escape. This evaporation is called trans epidermal water loss or TEWL. Your skin may feel tight, rough, thick, have a stinging sensation or turn red more easily.
I’ve got some tips for protecting your skin as we transition into cold weather.
- We may need to re-evaluate your home care. Adding supplemental serums to boost your moisturizer will help prevent your skin from becoming dry.

- While in the shower, avoid letting the hot water beat directly on your face. It can be harsh on skin that is already becoming sensitive. Use your hands to gently splash water onto your face or cleanse in the sink pre- or post-shower.
- Continue to wear sunscreen daily to protect from sun and wind.
- Don’t overexfoliate. Depending on the person, once a week is usually sufficient. Cleansing twice a day will remove any excess dry skin cells that need to be sloughed off. I often advise this, but it is especially true in cold weather. Exfoliating too often will cause TEWL, leading to dehydration in the skin, leaving it dry, irritated and uncomfortable.
- Add a creamy hydrating mask or a soothing sheet mask into your routine. They also can be applied to your hands, which are likely becoming chapped and cracked from excess washing.
Facial massage is an excellent way to get blood flowing, which nourishes the skin and reduces any stagnation that may inhibit proper hydration.
As always, it is my pleasure to be your skin-care specialist and help you achieve healthy, glowing skin. I strive to provide you with the best holistic treatments that will rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit.
